Who it's for
Gardeners who enjoy a word search, and anyone who would rather not squint at one. Every puzzle is set in big, clear letters, one to a page, and every page is about the garden: flowers, vegetables, herbs, fruit, trees, birds, bugs, tools, weather and the seasons. Once every word is found, the leftover letters spell a short, cheerful line about the garden.
It makes an easy gift for a birthday, Mother's Day, Father's Day or Christmas, and it isn't tied to any one season.
Inside the book
- How to Play. A large-print guide to where each level and the answers begin, the rules, and a small worked example of the hidden message.
- 90 puzzles in three levels. Easy puzzles 1 to 30 are 11 x 11 grids, with words running across, down and diagonally down to the right. Medium puzzles 31 to 60 are 12 x 12 and add words that read backward and diagonally upward. Harder puzzles 61 to 90 are 13 x 13 and use all eight directions. There are 1,493 words in all.
- Every puzzle page has a garden title, a GARDEN NOTE, the grid, the word list and a line to write the garden message on. The footer gives the puzzle number, its level and the page its answer is on.
- The answers, pages 94 to 116, in large print too: four to a page, the words circled, the message letters shaded and the message printed under each grid.
- My Garden Notes, a ruled page for your own garden jottings.
How to use it
- Start at the beginning. The levels are gentle steps, and each new direction is announced on the page where it starts.
- Read the leftovers. When every word is circled, read the unused letters from left to right and top to bottom. They spell the garden line. If it doesn't make sense, a word is missing or circled in the wrong place.
- Use a pencil. A thin loop is easy to erase and doesn't hide the letters around it.
Frequently asked questions
How big is the print?
The grid letters are about 22 to 26 point, and the word lists are 16 point. The answer key is in large print as well.
How hard are the puzzles?
They get harder in three steps: words that read forward, then backward and upward words too, then all eight directions in a larger grid.
What is the hidden message?
Every grid is filled exactly, with no random letters, so the letters left over after the last word spell a short garden line. Each page has a line to write it on.
Is every garden note a fact?
Most are checked facts. A few are practical tips instead, such as how deep to sow a seed.
How big is the book?
8.5 x 11 inches, 118 pages, printed in black ink.
